The Food Recovery Hierarchy is a list of actionable items organizations and community members can implement to prevent and divert food waste. This post provides various food management strategies to promote a healthy environment, a balanced society, and a waste-free economy.

How can you make a difference?

1. Source Reduction

  • Reduce food serving portions to promote full eating.

  • Buy only what you need for the week.

  • Organize your food inventory for FIFO (First-in, First-out) food usage.

2. Feed Hungry People

  • Find a local food pantry if you have/need extra groceries.

  • Donate to local shelters and soup kitchens.

3. Feed Animals

  • Kitchen Scraps can become livestock feed for animals

  • Bones and scapes can become plant food as well.

4. Industrial Uses

  • Expired foods can be utilized in Biofuel for energy.

  • Locate a food collection center for biofuel if available.

  • Food packaging can be recycled as well as converted to biodegradable products.

5. Composting

  • Start a compost box in the home gardens, for rich produce and grass.

6. Landfill/Incineration

  • Separate food waste by sector for proper disposal.
